Water Quality

Meets & Exceeds All-State and Federal Standards

When providing a product that is consumed by everyone in the Santa Clarita Valley, the importance of ensuring the quality of the water is vitally important and essential. I am pleased to say that the water served in the Santa Clarita Valley meets and exceeds all state and federal standards.

To accomplish this, SCV Water has invested in and constructed water treatment plants and well-head treatment facilities that meet the highest standards set by the state of California and the Federal government. SCV Water has a state-of-the-art certified laboratory that tests over 20,000 samples a year. This laboratory has the latest high technology equipment to test for Ammonium Perchlorate, Volatile Organic Compounds, PF AS and PFOA as well as other potential contaminates. This testing can now be accurate down to the parts per trillion level.

PFAS Chemicals In Our Water Supply

What Are PFAS?

Per-and polyfluoroalky substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals found in thousands of commonly used products such as non-stick cookware, clothing, shampoo, food wrappers, firefighting foam, Gore-Tex clothing, paints, cleaning supplies, and carpet.

How Did PFAS Get Into Our Water?

Like many communities throughout California and the nation, tiny microscopic amounts of PFAS have been found in our water supply.  SCV Water closely monitors the PFAS levels in our water supply and we test our water thousands of times per year to ensure that it meets the state and federal water quality standards. The water quality standard for PFAS levels must be below 10 parts per trillion. One part per trillion is equivalent to 1 grain of sand in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.  If any of our wells exceeds the PFAS levels set by the state, we take immediate action and remove the well from service for treatment.

What is SCV Water Doing To Remove PFAS?

SCV Water has taken immediate steps to address any detectible levels of PFAS chemicals in our groundwater, including taking proactive samplings of the water in all of our wells to ensure that they are in line with state and federal standards.  The water-resistant properties of PFAS make it difficult to remove from water; however, there are proven treatment options that we have implemented.  Our first PFAS treatment facility opened in the fall of 2020 and has restored the use of several wells impacted by PFAS chemicals.  Three additional projects are in the planning and construction phases and are set to go online in 2022.

The SCV Water Agency is a recognized leader in California in the mitigation of PFAS chemicals from our water supply.
