Growing Community Needs
Why If We Are In An 8 Year Drought Are New Developments Being Approved?
The responsibility to plan and approve growth is determined by the City of Santa Clarita and the Country of Los Angeles. Despite what many people believe, the SCV Water Agency has NO ability to approve or disprove plans – only to provide (by law) the water needed for these projects. Our long-term planning uses the City and County’s One Valley One Vision Plan which lays out future plans for the valley.
No one likes urban sprawl and it is probably one of the reasons why Santa Clarita is such a desirable place to live. It is also understandable that many residents wish that the “door would close to future developments” and to keep our town the size that it is. But – for a community to stay vibrant and a desirable place to live, thereneeds to be careful and responsible plans for the future. Without that, our tax base would erode and schools and community services would be affected. Businesses that provide needed jobs would look elsewhere. Young families would be forced to move outside of our community to afford housing -which further affects our schools. We need continued responsible planning.
Santa Clarita today is a wonderful place to live with many of the amenities that we desire. It is thanks to the careful planning by the SCV Water Agency, that we have the water to help make Santa Clarita the special place to live that it is. And, it is our extensive ongoing studies that ensure that our long-term water needs will be met when our community experiences drought.
