California Water Supply

What is the SCV Water Agency doing to ensure that we have enough water?

Long-term resource planning guarantees water supplies will meet current and future water needs, including periodic dry years and drought. SCV Water has invested in a diverse portfolio of water supplies to meet our future needs.

Our planning efforts include:

  • We have invested in Water Banking Programs where we store water in underground aquifers in Kem County for use during periodic dry years. The Agency owns an 8600 acre farm in the Central Valley where we use the farm’s water supply during dry years. We are also participating in the development and construction of a reservoir in Northern California to store water.

  • We have developed a Groundwater Sustainability Plan which focuses on managing our groundwater resources and guarantees water supplies are available to meet future water needs without depleting our groundwater.

  • We are expanding our Recycled Water Program where feasible. This renewable resource uses recycled water for outdoor irrigation and saves groundwater and imported water for drinking. Currently, recycled water is being used at several locations in the Santa Clarita Valley and will be expanded.

  • We have updated our Urban Water Management Plan which focuses on long-term water resource planning on a variety of water supply issues and topics. This identifies how we will meet the water needs as our valley grows.

  • We have adopted a Water Shortage Contingency Plan, which outlines how we will respond in the event of a shortage of water due to a supply interruption from a catastrophic event such as drought, earthquake or fire.
